This is a compelling novel set during colonial diamond mine development in late-19th-century South Africa. The plot is a twisted branch grown out of the South African’s historical roots as the diamond mine traders strip the ground to excavate enormous profits despite a cholera epidemic. The story begins when an impoverished British young woman sails to Cape Town to marry through an arrangement of forced opportunity. She is forced to make choices in the crossfire between love and betrayal, human rights and unbridled greed, and barren landscapes against lush European environment. For those bibliophiles who enjoyed The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham, this novel is a must-read.
