Librarian, La Mesa Branch

In this first novel, Hartman introduces readers to Goredd, a kingdom in a world where dragons can take human form. Sixteen year old Seraphina, a talented court musician, is caught up in the investigation when a member of the human royal family is murdered. The tenuous peace treaty between humans and dragons is threatened when it appears that the crime was committed by a dragon. Seraphina must help unravel this plot while protecting her own burdensome secrets. Hartman’s fantasy world is fully realized and mesmerizing, with some of the most interesting dragons I’ve seen in fiction. Don’t miss the wonderful glossary at the end, where Hartman manages to simultaneously expand upon and poke fun at the story.
