Graphic novels have turned out to be an engaging form for memoirists and biographers. Cartoonist Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home is one of the best.
Fun Home takes its title from the Bechdel family business, a funeral home. With subtle illustrations and flash-back prose, Alison Bechdel examines her small-town childhood from the perspective of her relationship with her father, a closeted high-school English teacher and funeral director. Identifying with her father, she learns only after his death that he had had affairs with men throughout her parents’ marriage. Her struggle to understand her father is the painful and funny key to understanding her own life.
